Arnold Company, known for its extensive line of railcar openers for hopper gates and boxcar doors, has designed and introduced a lightweight, handheld and flexible device to open truck trailer hopper gates/traps safely and efficiently.
The patent-pending Door Demon HTO (Hopper Trailer Opener) features an ideal combination of torque, speed, and weight specifically designed for hopper trailers, according to Albert Middeke, President of Arnold Company. “We have spent the last year in the field with key customers designing and prototyping this product to develop the best combination of features,” he explains. “The Door Demon HTO has enough non-impacting torque to open the tougher hopper gates, but it is also lightweight and controllable for safe use all day.”
“Our goal was to provide a product that would improve safety and productivity while also being accepted by the trailer owners, and I think we’ve done just that,” he says. “The unit was designed as a handheld tool for a reason. While our main objective was to make the tough job of opening hopper gates safer and easier, hopper trailer gates and traps are fairly easily damaged. With the speed level set low enough for complete control, the handheld unit allows the operator to know they are approaching the end of the gate.”
Several other features tailor the HTO to its operating environment. A unique shaft and socket design prevent detachment while allowing the three interchangeable trailer sockets to be switched out within seconds. The HTO comes standard with three socket assemblies able to open the majority of trailers, and special sockets are also available upon request. The unit also has a lever mechanism to manually lock the shaft when needed. Being air powered, it is ideal for dusty environments. Air requirements are also fairly low with the unit operating perfectly at only 15 CFM.
