Summers Manufacturing has added the new VRT Renegade™ tillage tool to its Variable Rate Tillage™ product line. Featuring iControl™ Implement Control technology, the VRT Renegade allows operators to adjust tillage performance on the go, using a cab-mounted iPad as the controller. The product gives farmers unprecedented control of tillage results, allowing the VRT Renegade to virtually replace many other vertical tillage, high-speed disks and conventional tillage implements.

The VRT Renegade features a variety of implement adjustments that can be made during operation for quickly adapting to changing field conditions. The adjustments are made in the cab with the simple touch of a button using an iPad, which connects wirelessly to the iControl computer mounted on the implement.

With this system operators can adjust the angle of the front and rear disk blades independently from 0 to 19 degrees to switch from light to aggressive tillage and anywhere in between. In addition to the blade angle, operators can adjust the hitch control to transfer more weight to the front or rear of the implement, or set the implement hitch to float mode. Operators can also use the iPad to set the tillage depth, gauge wheels, wing down pressure and rolling basket down pressure on the VRT Renegade. Presets can be saved and named to quickly recall previous implement settings.

The VRT Renegade is equipped with Summers exclusive Osmundson Mfg. Co. patented Samurai disk blades, which have a notched sawtooth design for sizing today’s tough residue and moving soil. The Samurai blades perform well in both wet soils and hard, dry conditions and are heat treated for extended life. The dual-mounted maintenance-free hubs are mounted to a patent-pending trip assembly utilizing a high-performance urethane spring for a consistent 1,200 pounds of down pressure for consistent cutting while providing cushion relief to help prevent damage from rocks and other foreign objects. The trip assemblies are mounted in-line, similar to a gang arrangement, for better sizing of residue than competitive designs. This unique feature combines the benefits of both gangs and independently mounted blades.

To create the ideal field finish, the VRT Renegade comes standard with an adjustable three-bar harrow and rolling baskets. The rolling baskets feature Summers’ patented internal mud scrapers to prevent mud build-up. They also include hydraulic down pressure, which can be adjusted on the iPad from the cab.

“When we were designing the VRT Renegade, we conducted focus groups to get input from many different farmers in various growing regions who had experience with most tillage tools on the market,” said Bruce Johnson, Director of Innovation at Summers Manufacturing. “We found a consistent theme that most farmers were continuing to look for a more versatile tillage tool that could be adjusted to produce different results and could work in virtually all field conditions. Even more, they wanted it to work at high speeds and be easy to use. That’s exactly what we created with the VRT Renegade. It’s one tool that’s capable of doing the job of high-speed disks, vertical tillage tools, conventional disks and anything in between. It can cover a lot of acres quickly at speeds up to 10 miles per hour and produces a great field finish and seedbed.”

“Summers has a long heritage of farmer-inspired products,” continued Johnson. “Over the years, working closely with farmers has led us to innovations ranging from things like the Rod-Weeder and Culti-Harrow in the late 1960s and early 1970s, to the first commercially produced vertical tillage tool in the late 1990s, the Summers SuperCoulter. The VRT Renegade is the direct result of farmers challenging us to deliver an implement that is flexible enough to meet their dynamic tillage needs from minimal to aggressive tillage. After years of research, development and product testing, we’re confident that the VRT Renegade addresses the challenges of today’s farmers and will continue the strong heritage of Summers tillage products.”

Other standard features on the VRT Renegade include a deep heavy-duty rectangular steel frame to enable maximum residue flow and smooth field finish. The VRT Renegade comes with a three-year limited warranty and is available in the color green or red. Summers is currently accepting orders for fall 2018 and 2019 delivery on this new product.
